France has one of the most competitive tax credit schemes in the video game industry. This is thanks to a push on R&D by Macron’s government.
Decree no. 2022-1392 of 19th October 2022 relaxed the Cinema and Animated Image Code, which allows companies to reap the benefits of a tax credit. It applies to the creation of a specific game and gives a tax exemption for 30% of development expenses up to 6 million euros per company per year.
To be eligible for this scheme, video game creators must fulfil the following criteria:
- Be subject to French corporation tax
- Be responsible for the artistic/technical production of the video game
- Be responsible for the relevant production expenses

- Have incurred a development cost of 100 000€ or more
- Be marketed to the public
- Be produced by French national or European Union citizens
