What are SIREN and SIRET numbers?

If you have investigated establishing yourself in France, then you may have come across the terms SIREN and SIRET number. So, what are they?

  • A SIREN number,

translated into English as ‘Business Directory Identification System’, is a 9-digit number issued by the National Institute of Statistics & Economic Studies (INSEE) upon creation of your company. The number cannot be changed and will be requested by all French administration when collaborating with you. In essence, it is proof that you are a legal and fully registered business in France and on the National Business Directory.

  • A SIRET number,

or ‘Directory of Establishments Identification System’ number is simply your 9-digit SIREN number followed by an additional 5. These extra digits permit the identification of the business’ head office and any secondary establishments if applicable. There will only be one SIREN number per company but as many SIRETs as there are secondary establishments.

How do I get SIREN and SIRET numbers?

To obtain these numbers, you will need to register online with the CFE. Your application will then be passed on to the Registry of Commerce and Companies (RCS) and the INSEE. Your SIRET and SIREN are issued once you have registered your business with the Chambre de Commerce, Chambre de Metiers or URSSAF depending on your area of work.
